The Walkmen are an American indie rock band that was formed in 2000 by members Hamilton Leithauser (vocals, guitar), Paul Maroon (guitar, piano), Walter Martin (organ, bass), Peter Bauer (bass, organ), and Matt Barrick (drums). They emerged from the ashes of two defunct bands: Jonathan Fire*Eater and The Recoys. Known for their signature, vintage-inspired sound that melded elements of post-punk revival with lush, intricate instrumentation, The Walkmen carved out a space for themselves in the indie music scene of the early 2000s.
The group's career includes several critically acclaimed albums, each showcasing their evolving sound. "Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me Is Gone" (2002) was their debut, followed by the breakthrough album "Bows + Arrows" in 2004, which featured the hit single "The Rat." They continued to develop their distinctive style and gained a reputation for their spirited live performances. After numerous years of growth and songs that captured the zeitgeist of urban melancholy and longing, The Walkmen released "You & Me" (2008), "Lisbon" (2010), and their celebrated final album "Heaven" (2012). Additionally, they demonstrated their versatility and reverence for musical history with projects like "Pussy Cats Starring The Walkmen" (2006), a song-for-song cover of the Harry Nilsson and John Lennon record. After an ostensibly final tour in 2013, the group went on an indefinite hiatus, leaving behind a legacy of sonic richness, poetic lyricism, and a deeply passionate fanbase.
