Giuseppe Di Stefano

Giuseppe Di Stefano (1921-2008) was one of the leading tenors of the 20th century, renowned for his beautiful voice, passionate delivery, and thrilling high notes. Born in Motta Sant'Anastasia, Sicily, Italy, Di Stefano began his career after World War II and quickly rose to international fame. He made his operatic debut in 1946 in Reggio Emilia with the role of Des Grieux in Massenet's "Manon," which kick-started a career marked by numerous acclaimed performances at the world's leading opera houses.

Di Stefano's voice was celebrated for its warmth and beauty, and he became especially associated with the operas of Puccini and Verdi, though his repertoire was extensive. His performances as Rodolfo in "La Bohème," the title role in "Don Carlo," and the Duke in "Rigoletto" are still considered definitive by many. His partnerships with fellow opera legends, such as soprano Maria Callas with whom he recorded numerous operas, were notable highlights. Beyond the opera stage, Di Stefano also charmed audiences with Neapolitan songs and other Italian popular tunes, leaving a rich legacy of recordings, including the critically acclaimed "O Sole Mio" and "Napule ca se ne va!" Di Stefano's legacy extends well beyond his liftime, and his recordings continue to be celebrated, echoing the sentiments of an era when operatic artistry was at its zenith.
