Luke Haines is a British musician, songwriter, and author best known as the frontman of the 1990s alternative rock band The Auteurs. Often cited as a key figure in the Britpop era—though he himself has been critical of the label—Haines is known for his sharp wit, darkly satirical lyrics, and distinctive voice. After The Auteurs, he played in the glam-influenced Black Box Recorder and later pursued a prolific solo career, crafting albums that are as eclectic as they are conceptually rich, tackling topics ranging from British history to obscure cultural references.
Haines has released numerous solo albums, including quirky and idiosyncratic projects like The British Nuclear Bunkers, Baader Meinhof, and Nine and a Half Psychedelic Meditations on British Wrestling of the 1970s & Early ’80s. His collaboration with R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, All the Kids Are Super Bummed Out, saw them delve into psychedelic and surreal territory. Haines is also a published author, having written memoirs such as Bad Vibes and Post Everything, where he recounts his life in music with biting humor and candor.
