Morgan Toney

Morgan Toney is a talented Mi'kmaq folk singer-songwriter and fiddler from Nova Scotia, Canada. Born in We'koqma'q First Nation, he later moved to Wagmatcook, where his musical journey began. Initially a drummer, Toney transitioned to the fiddle in the late 2010s, blending traditional Mi'kmaq music with Celtic folk influences, which he terms "Mi'kmaltic." His debut album, *First Flight*, released in 2021 and reissued in 2022 on Ishkōdé Records, showcases this unique fusion. Toney has gained recognition for his work, including a Canadian Folk Music Award nomination and a Juno Award nomination for his 2023 album *Resilience*.

Toney's music not only celebrates his heritage but also addresses contemporary issues affecting Indigenous communities. His performances have been well-received, and he has shared stages with notable artists like Ashley MacIsaac. Toney's commitment to preserving and promoting Mi'kmaq culture through music has made him a significant figure in both the Mi'kmaq and broader Atlantic Canadian music scenes. His recent releases reflect his continued exploration of traditional and contemporary themes, further solidifying his position as a leading voice in Indigenous music.
