Negativland

Negativland is an experimental music and sound collage band known for their innovative use of recorded audio and media cut-ups, often incorporating legal issues surrounding copyright into their artwork. The group formed in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1979 and comprises a fluctuating lineup of musicians and sound artists with core members Mark Hosler, David Wills (often known by his stage name, The Weatherman), Peter Conheim, and the late Don Joyce, among others.

Negativland has become synonymous with the culture jamming movement, often challenging listeners' perceptions of media and ownership through their sample-heavy productions, which frequently satirize corporate and consumer culture, media influence, legal issues, and intellectual property rights. Their notorious case with U2's label Island Records over a parody song called "U2" and the subsequent lawsuit put them at the forefront of debates on fair use. Over the years, they have tackled different themes using a range of media, not restricted to music albums. Releases such as "The World Will Decide," "True False," and "It's All in Your Head" reflect the group's continued commitment to cutting-edge satire and media critique. Despite (or because of) their entanglement with legal battles and censorship, Negativland continues to have a devoted following and is seen as a pioneering act in the audio collage and sound art scene.
