James Cotton

James Cotton was a revered American blues harmonica player, singer, and songwriter, renowned for his influential role within the genre. Born on July 1, 1935, in Tunica, Mississippi, Cotton's affinity with the harmonica began at a very early age, spurred by the influence of Sonny Boy Williamson II. By the age of nine, after the loss of his parents, he was already living with Williamson and honing his craft. In the 1950s, Cotton began his professional career playing with Howlin' Wolf and later with Muddy Waters, whose band he became an integral part for over a decade. His powerful, gusty harmonica style, punctuated by a deep understanding of the blues tradition, earned him a legendary status and the moniker "Mr. Superharp."

Cotton's solo career blossomed in the 1960s and 70s as he formed the James Cotton Blues Band, which released numerous records that were critically acclaimed. His discography includes a vast array of albums that showcase both an adherence to traditional blues roots and a willingness to experiment within the genre. Among his celebrated releases are "Chicago Sessions," "Mighty Long Time," and the Grammy-nominated "Cotton Mouth Man." His live performances, notably "Live at Antone's Nightclub," captured the electrifying energy that Cotton brought to the stage. Over the years, James Cotton's contributions to the blues music scene left an indelible mark that was recognized by multiple awards, including multiple Blues Music Awards and a Grammy Award in 1996 for the traditional blues album "Deep in the Blues." His passing in March 2017 was greatly mourned in the music community, but his legacy lives on through a storied catalog of blues classics that continue to inspire new generations of musicians and fans alike.
