George Kuo

George Kuo is a renowned Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar artist known for his traditional and soothing style, which bridges generations of Hawaiian music. Born on November 17, 1955, George grew up in Honolulu and began playing slack key guitar in high school, influenced by friends like Antone Gabriel, who played in the style of Albert Kawelo, a legendary teacher of slack key. George's music is deeply rooted in the old style of slack key from the 1940s, reflecting his appreciation for the lifestyle of his grandparents and older players. He is recognized for his relaxed and melodic playing style, focusing on delivering a message rather than showcasing technical runs.

George has had a distinguished career, winning Na Hoku Hanohano Awards for Instrumental Album of the Year in 1995 and 1996 for "Hawaiian Touch" and "Aloha No Na Kupuna," respectively. He has performed with notable musicians such as Dennis Kamakahi, Martin Pahinui, and Chet Atkins, and has appeared on prestigious stages like the Garrison Keillor Prairie Home Companion Show and the Hollywood Bowl. George continues to perform and contribute to the preservation of Hawaiian music, sitting on the boards of the Musician's Association of Hawaii and the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame. His recent releases include "Kiho’alu: Stories in Song, Vol 1" and other albums that reflect his dedication to traditional Hawaiian music.
