Onyx is a hardcore hip-hop group from South Jamaica, Queens, New York, formed in 1988. The original lineup included Fredro Starr, Sonny Seeza (formerly Suavé), and Big DS, with Sticky Fingaz (Fredro's cousin Kirk Jones) joining in 1991 after being discovered by the legendary Jam Master Jay, who signed them to his label JMJ Records. Known for their aggressive, high-energy style, Onyx broke through with their 1993 debut album *Bacdafucup*, which was a platinum-certified success, featuring the hit single “Slam.” Their raw, shouted delivery and hard-hitting beats carved out a unique place in early '90s hip-hop, also attracting attention from hardcore metal fans through collaborations with bands like Biohazard. Despite challenges in later years and solo projects by members, Onyx remains respected for their influential role in bringing a gritty, intense sound to the genre.
