Junoon is a pioneering Sufi rock band from Pakistan, often credited with creating and popularizing the genre by blending Western rock music with traditional South Asian and Sufi musical influences. Formed in 1990 by guitarist Salman Ahmad, the band's classic lineup also included vocalist Ali Azmat and bassist Brian O'Connell. Known for their powerful lyrics, spiritual themes, and a unique fusion of electric guitar riffs with tabla and other traditional instruments, Junoon quickly rose to fame in the 1990s.
Their breakthrough came with albums like Talaash, Azadi, and Parvaaz, which included hits such as "Sayonee" and "Bulleya," earning them a massive following not just in Pakistan but across South Asia and among the global South Asian diaspora. Often referred to as "the U2 of South Asia," Junoon used their music to address social issues and promote messages of peace and unity. Despite going on hiatus in the 2000s, the band's legacy continues to influence generations of musicians, and they have reunited several times for concerts and special projects.
