Steve MacLean

Steve MacLean is a versatile musician, composer, producer, and engineer with a career spanning several decades, starting from the early 1980s. He began playing drums and guitar as a child and quickly developed his skills in composition. He made a significant mark in the New York City music scene, working in recording studios with cutting-edge technology and performing in the downtown free improvisation scene. Over the years, MacLean has produced award-winning scores and sound design for commercials, films, and multimedia projects, while also co-founding the Portland Experimental Music Collective. He is known for blending traditional instruments with new digital technologies such as sampling and signal processing. Since 2000, he has been a professor at Berklee College of Music, where he teaches electronic production and design, and continues to perform and release music internationally.

MacLean’s musical style is quite experimental and polyrhythmic, and he has worked with notable artists like Roswell Rudd, Nick Didkovsky, and Chris Cutler. He leads the Steve MacLean Ensemble and continues to innovate within new music circles, having curated concert series and participated in numerous festivals. His recorded works include albums like *Flies in the Face of Logic* and *Radial Circuit*, and he remains an active figure in both academic and practical music spheres, bridging traditional and electronic music elements seamlessly.
