Hum is an alternative rock band formed in Champaign, Illinois in 1989, known for their dense, atmospheric sound that blends heavy, fuzz-laden guitars with introspective lyrics and melodic sensibilities. The band originally consisted of Matt Talbott (vocals, guitar), Jeff Dimpsey (bass), Tim Lash (guitar), and Bryan St. Pere (drums), and they gained a significant cult following throughout the 1990s.
Their 1995 release, "You'd Prefer An Astronaut," is their most commercially successful album and contains their best-known single, "Stars," which brought them into the mainstream spotlight. Hum's music often draws comparisons to space rock, due to its expansive and ethereal qualities. After the release of their album "Downward Is Heavenward" in 1998, the band struggled to achieve the same level of commercial success and eventually disbanded in 2000. However, adhering to the durability of their space-rock essence, Hum made a triumphant return in 2020 with "Inlet," their first full-length album in 22 years. The record was well-received by fans and critics alike, commended for its lush soundscapes that echo the band's earlier work while showcasing a matured songwriting prowess. Despite their prolonged hiatus, Hum's influence endured, resonating with a new generation of artists and fans who find solace and inspiration in their immersive sonic universe.
