Albert Mangelsdorff

Albert Mangelsdorff was a groundbreaking German jazz trombonist known for his innovative approach to the instrument, especially his mastery of multiphonics—a technique where he played and sang through the trombone simultaneously, creating rich, layered textures. Rising to prominence in the post-war European jazz scene, Mangelsdorff was a key figure in shaping modern jazz in Germany from the 1950s onwards, collaborating with both European and American jazz greats.

He performed in everything from traditional big bands to avant-garde free jazz ensembles, and his solo work, like the album *Tromboneliness*, showcased his virtuosity and creativity. Always pushing boundaries, Mangelsdorff helped lift the trombone into new artistic territory and inspired generations of European jazz musicians.
