Mel Lewis

Mel Lewis was a renowned American jazz drummer and bandleader. Born in 1929, he made a significant impact on the jazz scene, particularly through his work with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, which he co-founded in 1965. This big band became a staple of the New York jazz scene, performing regularly at the Village Vanguard. Lewis was known for his subtle, tasteful drumming style that perfectly complemented big band arrangements.

Throughout his career, Lewis collaborated with numerous jazz greats and led his own groups. After Thad Jones left their joint orchestra in 1978, Lewis continued to lead the band, which became known as the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra. He was active in jazz education and continued performing and recording until his death in 1990. Lewis's contributions to jazz drumming and big band music left a lasting legacy in the jazz world.
