Uxía Martínez Botana is a renowned Spanish double bassist celebrated for her exceptional technique and expressive intensity. Born in 1988, she started studying double bass and piano at the age of six in Ponferrada, Spain, and later honed her skills in Amsterdam at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam under distinguished teachers like Edicson Ruiz and Janne Saksala. At just 23, she became the first Spanish principal double bass of the Grammy-winning Kremerata Baltica orchestra, directed by Gidon Kremer, and has since held principal positions with the Brussels Philharmonic and the Weinberger Kammerorchester in Zurich.
Uxía is known both as a soloist and a chamber musician, having performed with prominent ensembles and artists worldwide, including Julia Fischer, Yuri Bashmet, and Maxim Vengerov. Her recent album, *Mendelssohn X Files*, showcases her innovative approach by placing the double bass in the lead role within Mendelssohn's string quartets, offering fresh emotional depth and textures. Besides her performing career, she teaches double bass at the Catalonia College of Music (ESMUC) in Barcelona.
