Memphis Ukulele Band

The Memphis Ukulele Band is a unique musical collective rooted in the vibrant musical heritage of Memphis. Formed by a group of local musicians, including Jon Hornyak, Matt Ross-Spang, Jason Freeman, Mark Edgar Stuart, and Kyndle McMahan, the band was conceived at Sun Studio in 2013. Their sound is a blend of diverse genres, from pop and blues to reggae and soul, all centered around the ukulele. This distinctive ensemble has a repertoire that includes classic covers and original compositions, such as Mark Edgar Stuart's "In-Laws." Their music often features intimate, evocative arrangements that showcase the versatility of the ukulele.

The band's debut album, released in 2016, features a mix of 10 covers and one original song, exploring various musical styles while maintaining a unique "ukulele soul" sound. Tracks like their rendition of "Valerie" highlight the band's ability to reinterpret well-known songs with a fresh, ukulele-driven twist. The Memphis Ukulele Band's performances have garnered a devoted local fan base, and their music is a testament to the creative spirit of Memphis's musical community.
