Şakiro

Şakiro, born Şakir Deniz on December 25, 1936, in Eleşkirt, Turkey, was a renowned Kurdish Dengbêj singer. He is celebrated for his powerful voice and storytelling through music, often referred to as the "King of Dengbêjs." Şakiro's family had a rich cultural background, and he was exposed to Dengbêj traditions from an early age. His music was frequently recorded on cassettes and distributed unofficially, as Kurdish cultural expression faced restrictions in Turkey during his time. He is remembered for his unique vocal style, including a distinctive "xulxulandin-hawînî" (a throat singing technique), and his ability to speak for hours without pause. Şakiro passed away on June 5, 1996, in İzmir, Turkey.

His legacy continues to influence Kurdish music, with his recordings serving as a valuable resource for aspiring Dengbêj singers. Despite the challenges faced by Kurdish artists during his era, Şakiro's contributions have helped preserve Kurdish cultural heritage through his music. His recent releases, such as "Awazên Dengbêjan" and "Stranên Bijartî," showcase his enduring impact on the Dengbêj tradition.
