Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock were a hip-hop duo hailing from Harlem, New York. Formed in the mid-1980s, the pair shot to fame with their 1988 hit "It Takes Two," a track that became a defining moment in the crossover between hip-hop and mainstream pop music. The song, which utilized a sample from Lyn Collins' 1972 song "Think (About It)," was produced by Teddy Riley and became a massive street anthem. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest hip-hop songs ever, achieving multi-platinum status and greatly influencing the genre's direction.
While "It Takes Two" was undoubtedly their flagship release, Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock also enjoyed further success with singles like "Get On the Dance Floor" and the deeply resonant "Joy and Pain," showcasing their ability to meld infectious beats with relatable lyricism. Although they never replicated the colossal impact of "It Takes Two," their contributions to hip-hop have left an indelible mark. The duo briefly reunited and released music in the 90s, including tracks like "Break of Dawn" and its subsequent remixes, but they would largely remain celebrated for their groundbreaking work in the late 80s. DJ EZ Rock, born Rodney Bryce, sadly passed away in 2014, but the legacy of the pair's work continues to live on in the samples and soundscapes of contemporary hip-hop.
