The group was originally formed in New York City in 1989 by Nelson Zapata and managed by Porfirio "Popi" Piña. Originally a duo, the lineup has since varied, with Nelson Zapata remaining as the consistent driving force behind the ensemble.

Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Proyecto Uno gained popularity with hits like "El Tiburon," "25 Horas," and "Está Pegao," becoming a cornerstone in the merengue fusion genre.
