Chimpan A

Chimpan A is a progressive and genre-blending music project led by multi-instrumentalist Robert Reed, known from the prog-rock band Magenta, and vocalist Steve Balsamo, a West End star best known for his role in *Jesus Christ Superstar*. Formed in 2006 in South Wales, Chimpan A combines elements of trip-hop, ambient, rock, and progressive styles, resulting in a sound that critics have likened to a mix of Pink Floyd, Air, and Massive Attack, but with a distinctive, heartfelt approach.

The project features a rich variety of collaborators, including vocalists Kirstie Roberts, Christina Booth, and opera singer Shan Cothi, as well as contributors in orchestration and spoken word. Their 2020 album *The Empathy Machine* and the 2025 release *M.I.A. Vol. 1* showcase their evolving sound—a diverse and emotional fusion that balances experimental textures with melodic accessibility. Chimpan A is celebrated for its layered vocal harmonies, thoughtful lyricism, and the inclusion of classical and electronic influences, making it a standout project in modern progressive and art rock.
