Voice of the Cross Brothers Lazarus & Emmanuel are pioneers of contemporary Nigerian gospel music whose soulful voices dominated the airwaves from the 1970s through the 1990s. The duo—Apostle Lazarus Chukwuoma (Brother Lazarus) and Reverend Emmanuel Ogbonna (Bro. Emmanuel)—first met in a church in Aba, Nigeria, discovering their musical compatibility which sparked their journey into gospel music. They blended traditional Highlife, hip-hop, and gospel influences to create a unique sound that deeply ministered to the spirit and soul of their audience. Their heartfelt songs like "Sing Hallelujah," "Joy of Salvation," "Thank You For Saving Me," "Satan Is In Trouble," and "Good Morning Jesus" have become staples in Nigerian Christian devotion and worship, inspiring generations across Africa and beyond.
Though the pair eventually relocated to the United States, where circumstances including Bro. Emmanuel's health challenges limited joint performances, Brother Lazarus eventually returned to Nigeria to continue the legacy with his son filling in. Voice of the Cross’s mission was always to spread hope and spiritual upliftment through music, not merely commercial success, and their influence paved the way for the modern Nigerian gospel scene. Their contributions have been recognized with multiple awards including the Nigerian Music Awards and lifetime achievement honors, cementing their lasting impact on gospel music in Nigeria.
