Jean Sulem is a distinguished French violist and educator, known for his dynamic contributions to contemporary classical music and chamber repertoire. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire under Serge Collot and served as the principal viola of the Ensemble Intercontemporain from 1981 to 1990, working closely with Pierre Boulez. Sulem is a founding member of the Rosamonde String Quartet, established in 1981, and has been actively involved in performing new works, with several composers writing pieces specifically for him. Over his career, he has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician at numerous international festivals across Europe, America, Russia, Japan, Korea, and Australia, also recording more than thirty CDs.
Beyond his performance career, Jean Sulem is a respected pedagogue. Since 1990, he has been a professor of viola and chamber music at the Paris Conservatoire and has held teaching positions at the Tibor Varga Music Academy in Switzerland and the Cervo Summer Academy in Italy. He regularly gives master classes worldwide and serves as a jury member for international competitions. Many of his former students have gone on to hold leading roles in major orchestras and string quartets across Europe.
