The Ex
The Ex is a wildly eclectic and fiercely independent band from the Netherlands, originally formed in 1979. Emerging from the punk and anarchist squatter scenes in Amsterdam, The Ex started out with a raw, abrasive sound but quickly grew into something far more expansive and unpredictable. Over the years, they've incorporated elements of post-punk, free jazz, folk, and experimental music into their sound, working with an impressive range of collaborators from around the world, including Ethiopian saxophonist Getatchew Mekuria and cellist Tom Cora.
Known for their DIY ethos and adventurous spirit, The Ex have never stayed in one lane. Their discography spans dozens of albums, EPs, and collaborations, and they're celebrated for their powerful live shows that balance political urgency with infectious energy and improvisational flair. Despite multiple lineup changes, the band has remained remarkably consistent in its commitment to musical exploration and social engagement, making them a major fixture in underground and experimental music scenes for over four decades.
