Juan Bautista José Cabanilles (also spelled Cabanilles) (1644–1712) was a Spanish composer, organist, and priest remembered as one of the most important Spanish Baroque composers. Born in Algemesí, Valencia, Spain, Cabanilles served as the organist of the Valencia Cathedral from 1668 until his death. His music, predominantly for the keyboard, showcases the height of the Spanish Baroque musical style.
Cabanilles' works, rich in counterpoint and full of imaginative ornamentation, positioned him as the "Spanish Bach." His compositions include over 200 pieces for the organ, involving toccatas, passacaglias, and tientos, and his keyboard music has seen a resurgence in popularity, evidenced by a series of recent recordings dedicated to his oeuvre. Despite being primarily known for his keyboard music, Cabanilles also composed sacred vocal works, exhibiting his versatility as a composer. Today, his legacy is celebrated for his contributions to the Baroque period and his role in shaping the course of Spanish classical music.
