Mickey Roker

Mickey Roker was a highly respected American jazz drummer known for his swing, precision, and versatility. Born in Miami in 1932 and raised in Philadelphia, Roker became a sought-after drummer in the hard bop and post-bop scenes, performing with jazz legends like Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, and Herbie Hancock. He was especially admired for the way he meshed rhythmic muscle with a deeply musical touch, making him a favorite in both small combos and big bands.

Roker’s career really took off in the 1960s and ’70s, during which he recorded with the likes of Milt Jackson, Horace Silver, and Duke Pearson. He was also a fixture in the Modern Jazz Quartet and a longtime member of Dizzy Gillespie's ensembles. Later in life, he became a cornerstone of the Philadelphia jazz community, mentoring younger musicians while maintaining an active presence on the scene. Whether behind the kit in a smoky club or on a revered album session, Mickey Roker always brought a signature blend of swing and soul.
