The Long Winters is an indie rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in the early 2000s, known for their compelling lyrics, catchy melodies, and an engaging mix of folk and pop elements with an indie twist. The brainchild of John Roderick, the band's frontman and primary songwriter, The Long Winters' journey began after the demise of Roderick's previous group, The Western State Hurricanes. With a rotating lineup of musicians, including at times former members of Harvey Danger and Death Cab for Cutie, The Long Winters cultivated a unique sound that garnered a dedicated fan base.
Since their debut, the band has released a series of critically acclaimed albums, peaking with records like "Putting The Days To Bed" in 2006, which combined sprightly pop with introspective musings. Prior to that, albums like "The Worst You Can Do Is Harm" (2002) and "When I Pretend to Fall" (2003) established their reputation in the indie music scene with a perfect blend of emotional depth and accessible soundscapes. The EP "Ultimatum" in 2005, further showcased the band's evolving artistry with its more acoustic and stripped-down approach. Although The Long Winters went on hiatus and haven't released a full album since 2006, their contribution to the protest project "30 Days, 30 Songs" in 2016 with the track "Make America Great Again" echoed their continued relevance and unyielding spirit. The band's ability to navigate through heartbreak and hope with equal deftness cements their place in indie rock history.
