Lina Pagliughi

Lina Pagliughi was one of the premier coloratura sopranos of her time, enchanting audiences with her vocal purity and agility. Born on May 27, 1907, in Brooklyn, New York, to Italian parents, she grew into an immensely talented singer whose career was mostly based in Italy. Pagliughi had a voice well-suited for bel canto roles, wherein she flourished and carved her niche.

Making her operatic debut in 1927 as Gilda in Giuseppe Verdi's "Rigoletto," Lina Pagliughi's career quickly ascended. She became especially renowned for her interpretation of the role of Violetta in Verdi's "La Traviata," which became one of her signature roles. Though her international career was mostly conducted in Europe, Pagliughi never severed her ties with the United States and performed there occasionally. After World War II, she began to perform less frequently, but she left behind a legacy of recordings that continued to awe and inspire. Noted for her performances in Bellini's "I Puritani" and other staples of the bel canto repertoire, Pagliughi retired from the stage in the late 1950s, yet her voice lives on through her recordings. She passed away on October 2, 1980, in Vignale Monferrato, Italy, but remains remembered as a luminary in the history of opera.
