Sukmit Gurung

Sukmit Gurung is a renowned Indian singer known for her contributions to modern classical Nepali music. Born in Gangtok, Sikkim, as Sukmit Ongmu Lepcha, she began singing at a young age, initially performing in church and later on stage at the age of 14. Her entry into the Nepali music industry was marked by winning a singing contest organized by Radio Nepal in the 1970s. This victory propelled her career, leading to her debut in Ambar Gurung's musical play *Malati Mangale* and her first recorded song *Sunchadi Bhanda Mahango*. Sukmit Gurung has sung over 400 songs, including popular hits like *Priyatam* and *Relimai*, and has worked with notable musicians such as Gopal Yonzon and Sambhujeet Baskota. She has also been involved in playback singing for Nepali cinemas and has performed internationally.

Sukmit Gurung's legacy extends beyond her music; she was appointed as the assistant music director at Nepal Pragya Prathisthan, a government organization dedicated to promoting Nepali culture. Her contributions to Nepali music have been celebrated both nationally and internationally, including performances in Britain and participation in joint venture films with Pakistan and Bangladesh. Despite her vocal cord issues, which led to a temporary distance from the stage, Sukmit Gurung remains a celebrated figure in Nepali music. She is married to Balram Gurung and has three children. Her albums include *Kahin ta Birsanu Timile*, *Palpal*, and *Rangeen Lahar*, showcasing her enduring impact on the Nepali music scene.
