MARTIN CHARNIN

Martin Charnin was a celebrated American lyricist, writer, and theater director best known for creating the lyrics to the iconic Broadway musical Annie. Born in 1934, Charnin began his career as a performer, notably appearing as one of the original Jet gang members in West Side Story. However, he soon transitioned behind the scenes, where he made his biggest impact in musical theater.

In addition to crafting the unforgettable lyrics for Annie — including the timeless anthem “Tomorrow” — Charnin had a long and diverse career in entertainment, contributing to numerous stage productions and television specials. He also directed many productions of Annie around the world. His work earned him both a Grammy and a Tony Award, solidifying his place in theater history as a creative force with a knack for heartfelt storytelling and catchy tunes.
