Derek Broadbent

Derek Broadbent is a renowned figure in the brass band world, known for his contributions as a conductor, arranger, and composer. He began playing the cornet at the age of nine with the Thornton Cleveleys Silver Band. Following a career in the military, he became a professional arranger and musical director. Notably, he served as the resident conductor of the prestigious Brighouse & Rastrick Band for ten years, achieving significant success, including a victory in the National Championships in 1980 and the chart-topping success of "The Floral Dance." He also conducted the Black Dyke Mills Band during their 1985 "Grand Slam" year. Broadbent has been freelance since 1990, directing many top UK bands and composing and arranging music widely performed in the brass band scene.

In addition to his conducting roles, Broadbent has been recognized for his contributions to brass bands, receiving the Iles Medal of Honour in 1988. He has also been involved in various adjudicating engagements and was the chairman of the Association of Brass Band Adjudicators until 2010. His arrangements and compositions are highly regarded in the band world, featuring regularly in concert programs. One of his notable collaborations is the album "Life Divine," recorded with the Black Dyke Band and Major Peter Parkes.
