Norman Cordon

**Norman Cordon** was an American bass-baritone who left his mark on the opera world during the mid-20th century, particularly known for his robust voice and commanding stage presence. Born in 1904, he became a staple at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he performed from the late 1930s through the 1940s. His roles in operas like *Aida* (alongside Giovanni Martinelli) and *Norma* (with Zinka Milanov in the 1944 Met performance) showcased his versatility in both Verdi and bel canto works. He also appeared in Wagnerian operas, including *Lohengrin*, and tackled Mozart’s *Don Giovanni* under conductor Paul Breisach in 1943.

Cordon’s career extended beyond the Met, with performances at major U.S. opera houses and a reputation for blending rich vocal tone with dramatic intensity. After retiring from the stage, he shifted to teaching, sharing his expertise with aspiring singers until his death in 1964. Though less widely remembered today, his live recordings capture the gravitas that made him a respected figure of his era.
