Strike is a New Zealand percussion ensemble founded in 1993, originally formed as a group of classically-trained musicians. The group quickly gained a reputation for its dynamic, high-energy performances and for blending elements of classical music with theatrical movement, dance, and influences from a range of genres. Members were drawn from among the country’s top percussionists, and the group earned widespread recognition, especially after winning the 2001 Tui at the New Zealand Music Awards for their album *New Zealand Percussion Music*.
Strike became known for their ambitious, choreographed shows and their work with leading New Zealand composers such as Gareth Farr, David Downes, Ross Harris, John Psathas, Murray Hickman, and Miriama Young. They expanded beyond the concert stage to offer workshops and educational programs, and performed internationally across Asia, Europe, and North America. The ensemble’s company, Strike Percussion Limited, was disestablished in 2022.
