Born in Naples, Italy in 1972, Rino Cerrone grew up with a restless spirit—competing in national motorbike races as a youth, but his passion for music soon overtook the track scene. By the late 1980s, he was diving into punk and rock concerts before getting swept up in the underground electronic currents emerging from groups like The Orb and Psychic Warriors of Gaia. Cerrone’s curiosity led him deep into techno and trance, and by 1994, he left motor racing behind to become an underground DJ and prominent figure in Naples’ techno scene.
In 1995, he co-founded the live techno-progressive project Q-Men, and by 1997, released his first record on Marco Carola’s Design Music label. Rino went on to launch his own influential labels, including Ri'li:s, Loose Records, and Unri’li:s, helping shape the rich, minimal, and funky “Neapolitan techno” sound that became his hallmark. Over the years, he played major festivals and clubs worldwide, mentoring a generation of artists before retiring from DJing around 2012. Cerrone’s legacy as a pioneer and underground hero in Naples’ techno scene remains indelible, and he passed away in 2024 at the age of 52.
