Dénes Szabó

Dénes Szabó is a renowned figure in Hungarian and international choral music, born in Makó in 1947. He studied music in Szeged, Miskolc, and Budapest, and began his teaching career at the Zoltán Kodály Primary School in Nyíregyháza. In 1975, he founded the Cantemus Children’s Choir, which later expanded into a choral institute with three choirs: the Cantemus Children’s Choir, the Pro Musica Girls’ Choir, and the Cantemus Mixed Voice Choir. Under his direction, these choirs have achieved numerous international awards and championships. Szabó is highly respected for his expertise in choral conducting and music education, often leading masterclasses and serving as a judge in prominent international choir competitions. He has received several prestigious awards, including the Ferenc Liszt Prize, the Bartók Béla – Pásztory Ditta Prize, the Kossuth Prize, and the Hungarian Cultural Heritage Prize. In 2014, he was honored with the title "Artist of the Nation" for his contributions to Hungarian culture.

Szabó's work is deeply rooted in the traditions of Hungarian composers like Zoltán Kodály and Béla Bartók, and he is celebrated for his authentic interpretations of their music. His choirs have recorded numerous albums featuring works by these and other Hungarian composers, such as Miklós Kocsár. Szabó's dedication to music education and his influence on the global choral scene have made him a sought-after lecturer and conductor at international festivals and conferences.
