Karl Engel

Karl Engel was a celebrated Swiss pianist renowned for his sensitive and insightful interpretations of classical and romantic repertoire. Born in 1923, he gained international acclaim for his performances of works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Schumann. Engel had a particular affinity for lieder accompaniment and was a frequent collaborator with some of the greatest vocalists of his time, including Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Edith Mathis.

In addition to his performance career, Engel was a dedicated teacher and served on the faculty at the Hochschule für Musik in Hanover. His legacy includes an extensive discography, highlighted by landmark recordings of Mozart piano works and Schumann’s complete piano music.
