Sleepytime Gorilla Museum (SGM) was an avant-garde rock band hailing from Oakland, California, known for their esoteric and theatrical performances, as well as their experimental approach to music. Formed in 1999, the group was composed of a rotating lineup of multi-instrumentalists and performers, with core members including Nils Frykdahl, Carla Kihlstedt, Dan Rathbun, Moe! Staiano, and Matthias Bossi among others. They derived their unusual name from the Sleepytime Gorilla Press, a fictional publishing company invented by the Dada and Surrealist-inspired poet, Ivan Stang. SGM's sound was an amalgam of progressive rock, metal, free jazz, and modern classical music, peppered with industrial and world music influences, which they delivered with a sense of macabre humor and social commentary.

The band's lyrical content often revolved around anti-commercial, anti-conformist, and philosophical themes, wrapped in obscure and poetic imagery. Their stage shows were equally eccentric, featuring homemade instruments, intricate costumes, and performance art elements that contributed to their cult following. Over the course of their active years, they released a number of records which showcased their evolution and depth as a unique voice within the alternative music scene. Key releases such as "Of Natural History" (2004) and "In Glorious Times" (2007) highlighted their ability to combine relentless energy with complex arrangements, while "Grand Opening And Closing" (2001) served to introduce their unorthodox sound. Though the band officially disbanded in 2011 after their final tour, their influence endures in the avant-garde music community, and they are remembered for their groundbreaking contributions to the genre. Their recorded live performances, such as the album simply titled "Live," captured the raw and dynamic essence of their music for both dedicated fans and newcomers alike.
