Marita Viitasalo, known as Marita Viitasalo-Pohjola, is a Finnish pianist born on December 13, 1948, in Mäntyharju. She is a graduate of the Sibelius Academy, where she completed her diploma in 1972. Additionally, she studied at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome and under Dieter Weber at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna, earning another diploma in 1976. Viitasalo-Pohjola has achieved recognition in the music world, notably finishing third in the Maj Lind Piano Competition in 1968. She has performed extensively around the world, both as a solo artist and in collaborations, including with the Trio Finlandia, which she founded in 1986. Her repertoire includes works by notable composers like Debussy and Sibelius. She has also been recognized for her contributions, receiving the Pro Finlandia Medal in 2006. Marita Viitasalo-Pohjola is also a teacher, currently instructing piano at the Sibelius Academy.
One of her notable solo albums includes a recording of Debussy's Préludes, Book 2, and Suite Bergamasque. Her work often showcases a blend of classical and contemporary music, reflecting her versatility as a performer. Additionally, she has worked with other artists, such as oopperalaulaja Soile Isokoski, and has been involved in various musical projects over the years.
