Irshad Khan is an acclaimed Indian classical musician known for his mastery of the surbahar and sitar. Born around 1963 into the legendary Imdadkhani gharana, he is the son and disciple of maestro Ustad Imrat Khan and the nephew of the great Ustad Vilayat Khan. A child prodigy, Irshad gave his first public performance at the age of seven and made a remarkable international debut at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall when he was just 13. He went on to become the youngest soloist to perform at the prestigious Indian All Night concert at the Proms at the age of 18. Over his career, he has performed extensively worldwide, blending the traditional gayaki ang (vocal style) and tantra ang (instrumental technique) into his unique approach on both instruments.
Beyond performing, Irshad Khan is dedicated to education and preserving his musical heritage. He is the founder and president of the Universal Academy for Musicians, with locations in Mississauga, Toronto, Mumbai, Rochester NY, and Kolkata, helping to nurture the next generation of classical musicians. Known for his innovations in left-hand meends and right-hand tantra techniques, Irshad continues to be a leading torchbearer of the Imdadkhani gharana, carrying forward a musical legacy that spans over four centuries.
