João Gilberto

João Gilberto, born João Gilberto Prado Pereira de Oliveira, on June 10, 1931, in Juazeiro, Bahia, Brazil, was a musician renowned for his integral role in the development of bossa nova. With his innovative guitar style, intimate vocal approach, and unrivaled timing, he transformed the Brazilian music scene and exerted a lasting influence on the global music industry.

Often hailed as one of the fathers of bossa nova, Gilberto's 1958 recording of "Chega de Saudade," a song composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes, is widely recognized as the genre's inaugural anthem. His unique playing style, characterized by sophisticated harmonies and a syncopated rhythm, became synonymous with the sound that would captivate listeners worldwide. His album "Getz/Gilberto," a collaboration with American saxophonist Stan Getz, featured the international hit "The Girl from Ipanema," sung by Gilberto's then-wife Astrud Gilberto, which propelled bossa nova to prominence in the 1960s. Throughout his illustrious career, João Gilberto remained a beloved and enigmatic figure in the music world until his passing on July 6, 2019. His legacy lives on through the rich discography he leaves behind, including performances captured on live albums such as "Ao Vivo em Buenos Aires" and "Live At Umbria Jazz," as well as numerous remastered releases, which continue to enchant new generations of music lovers.
