The Rokes

The Rokes were a British pop-rock band that found significant success in Italy during the 1960s. Formed in 1963 by English expatriates Shel Shapiro (lead vocals and guitar) and Mike Shepstone (drums and vocals), the band initially played gigs in the United Kingdom before relocating to Italy. There, they were joined by Bobby Posner on bass guitar and Johnny Charlton on lead guitar. The Rokes swiftly became one of the most beloved and influential bands of the Italian beat scene, having a unique appeal thanks to their British roots combined with their mastery of the Italian language.

The band's discography boasts hits that encapsulate the swinging sixties and the melodic charm that won over Italian audiences. Their music ranged from the energetic "Che mondo strano" to the melancholy "Lacrime sul cuore," revealing their versatility and knack for capturing the spirit of the time. Despite being best known for their Italian-language songs, The Rokes also recorded English-language tracks, reflecting their British origins. After disbanding in 1970, each member pursued individual projects, but their music continues to be remembered and celebrated, as evident by the release of collections like "1969 Recording Session," "The Rokes - Rarities 1967," and "The Rokes - 1965 Recording Session," which are cherished retrospectives of their musical journey.
