Dom Flemons

Dom Flemons, often hailed as "The American Songster," is a modern-day purveyor of traditional African-American folk music, blues, and old-time country music. His career took a significant leap forward as a founding member of the Grammy-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, a group that revived black string band music form the 1920s and 1930s. After his departure from the group in 2013, Flemons continued to build his solo career, carving out a unique niche as a historian, musician, and advocate for the underrepresented narratives in American music.

His 2018 album "Black Cowboys" on the Smithsonian Folkways label is an homage to the African-American cowboy narratives that have been largely omitted from mainstream culture; it received widespread critical acclaim for its historical importance and musical craftsmanship. Flemons' extensive discography showcases his versatility and encompasses a range of styles, from early jazz and ragtime to folk and Americana. Not only a skilled instrumentalist playing the banjo, fife, guitar, percussion, harmonica, and quills, Flemons is also a compelling storyteller, engaging audiences with historical anecdotes and the origins of his repertoire, ensuring the legacy of traditional American music continues to resonate with modern listeners.
