Joshua Kyan Aalampour is a 23-year-old self-taught classical composer of Chinese and Persian descent. Born in New Jersey, he spent part of his childhood in China due to his parents' entrepreneurial ventures. His journey into music began at 16, motivated initially by a desire to prove a piano teacher wrong after being told he couldn't play. Using online resources and a $16 keyboard, he taught himself piano and soon discovered a passion for composition. Within a short period, he composed his first piece, "Reverie," which he later performed at Lincoln Center. Joshua is known for his prolific output, including works like "The Benoni" and "Midnight Tryst," and he continues to evolve his style while studying music at UC Berkeley. He also engages with his audience through daily performances on TikTok and by teaching music globally.
Joshua's compositions often reflect personal themes and leitmotifs, which he views as part of a lifelong musical narrative. His work spans solo piano pieces to full orchestral scores, showcasing his versatility and dedication to his craft. Despite not being classically trained, Joshua has achieved significant recognition, including composing a score for a feature-length film. His music is characterized by its emotional depth and late-classical sounds, resonating with listeners through its introspective and evocative qualities.
