King of Asgard is a Swedish melodic death metal band infused with the rich tradition of Scandinavian folk and Viking lore. Formed in 2008, the group hails from Mjölby and has established itself as a powerhouse in the metal scene, merging the harshness of blackened riffing with the epic narrative of Norse mythology. The band was founded by guitarist/vocalist Karl Beckman who, after the dissolution of his previous band, Mithotyn, decided to continue exploring themes of Norse legends and history. Beckman joined forces with bassist Jonas Albrektsson to form the core of King of Asgard's lineup, later solidifying their sound with the addition of drummer Karsten Larsson, also a former Mithotyn member.
Their discography has steadily evolved in both maturity and complexity, with "Fi'mbulvntr" marking their formidable debut in 2010. This was followed by their acclaimed sophomore effort "...to North" in 2012, expanding their musical approach and lyrical depth. The album's narrative dove deep into the ancient sagas and traditions that continue to inspire the band's creative direction. King of Asgard carried forward their relentless creative pursuit with "Karg" in 2014, and "Taudr" in 2017, the latter being their first release under the Trollmusic label. In 2021, the band released "Svartrviðr", yet another testament to their ability to weave intricate stories through powerful melodies and thunderous beats. With this latest release, King of Asgard maintains their status as steadfast torchbearers of Viking metal, a genre that they continue to redefine through their evocative music and storytelling prowess.
