Álvaro José Arroyo González, known artistically as Joe Arroyo, was a Colombian salsa and tropical music singer and songwriter who left an indelible mark on the Latin music scene. Born on November 1, 1955, in Cartagena de Indias, and raised in the neighborhood of Tesca, Joe’s career spanned over four decades where he developed a unique style that blended salsa with a variety of Latin musical genres. His powerful voice and charismatic performances made him a beloved figure in the world of Latin music.
Arroyo began his career at a young age, singing in local bars and brothels in his hometown before moving to Barranquilla, where he joined several bands and refined his craft. He rose to prominence in the 1970s as the lead vocalist for the renowned band Fruko y sus Tesos, part of the famed record label Discos Fuentes. In 1981, he formed his own band, La Verdad, and released hits that are now considered salsa classics, such as "La Noche", "Rebelión", and "En Barranquilla Me Quedo". Through albums like "Arroyo Peligroso," "La Verdad de Joe Arroyo," and the celebrated "Milenario" series, Joe Arroyo became an iconic figure known as "El Centurión de la Noche." Despite facing personal challenges including drug addiction, his legacy as a pioneer of Colombian salsa and a master storyteller whose lyrics often reflected social and historical themes remains unmatched. Joe Arroyo passed away on July 26, 2011, but his music continues to be celebrated and enjoyed by fans around the world.
