Don Gillis

Don Gillis was an American composer, conductor, and music educator known for his accessible and often humorous orchestral works that celebrated American culture and values. Born in 1912, Gillis composed a wide array of music, including symphonies, wind ensemble pieces, and radio scores. Perhaps best known for his Symphony No. 5½, A Symphony for Fun, Gillis had a knack for blending classical forms with popular musical styles, embracing a fresh and distinctly American voice in classical composition.

In addition to his work as a composer, Gillis enjoyed a significant career in broadcasting, serving as a producer for the NBC Symphony Orchestra under Arturo Toscanini. A dedicated educator, he also taught and mentored young musicians later in his life. Gillis's music remains appreciated for its wit, optimism, and tuneful charm, with recent releases continuing to highlight his innovative contributions to 20th-century American music.
