Leopold Koželuch

Leopold Koželuch was a prolific Czech composer, pianist, and teacher who was active during the Classical period. Born in 1747 in Bohemia (now part of the Czech Republic), Koželuch made a name for himself in Vienna, where he became a prominent musical figure in the late 18th century. He was well-respected for his keyboard works, particularly his sonatas, and went on to succeed Mozart as the court composer and music director for the Imperial Court after Mozart’s death.

Koželuch’s music is known for its clarity, charm, and melodic elegance, often compared stylistically to both Mozart and early Beethoven. While he was incredibly popular in his own time, his work later fell into relative obscurity, though recent performances and recordings—especially of his symphonies, chamber music, and complete keyboard sonatas—have contributed to a modern reevaluation of his legacy.
