Super Unison is a powerful and dynamic force in the punk and post-hardcore music scenes that emerged out of Oakland, California. The band was formed in 2014 when Meghan O'Neil Pennie, formerly of the punk outfit Punch, partnered with drummer Justin Renninger of Snowing, and later recruited bassist Kevin DeFranco to create a trio that packs a punch with both emotion and volume. The band takes its name from a Drive Like Jehu song, signaling their alignment with the aggressive yet intricate stylings of the post-hardcore genre.
The band burst onto the scene with their self-titled debut EP "Super Unison" in 2015, followed by their first full-length album "Auto" in 2016, released through Deathwish Inc., a label well-respected within the hardcore community. Their sound is characterized by tightly wound riffs, relentless rhythms, and Pennie's raw, urgent vocal delivery, which combined, command attention and evoke a visceral response from their listeners. Continuing to refine their sound, their follow-up LP "Stella" arrived in 2018 and was met with critical acclaim for its dynamic approach to songwriting and earnest lyrical themes. Super Unison's precise execution and intense stage presence have cemented their reputation as a formidable and innovative act within the modern punk landscape. The release of the singles like "Orchids" has only further showcased their ability to blend melody with dissonance, underlined by a fierce and emotive core.
