Pandit Bhajan Sopori

Pandit Bhajan Sopori was a renowned Indian santoor player and composer. Born in 1948 in Srinagar, Kashmir, he came from a family of musicians and was considered a master of the santoor, a stringed instrument used in Indian classical music. Sopori was known for his innovative approach to playing the santoor, developing a style called 'Sopori Baaj' that expanded the instrument's capabilities in classical performances. He received numerous awards for his contributions to music, including the Padma Shri in 2004 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1992.

Sopori composed thousands of songs in various languages and was involved in promoting Indian classical music both in India and internationally. He founded a music academy called SaMaPa (Sopori Academy for Music and Performing Arts) to train new generations of musicians. Sadly, Pandit Bhajan Sopori passed away on June 2, 2022, at the age of 73, leaving behind a rich musical legacy.
