Cortex

Cortex is a seminal French jazz-funk band primarily known for their profound influence on the genres of acid jazz, hip hop, and neo-soul. The group was founded in the 1970s by keyboardist and composer Alain Mion. Cortex's signature sound is characterized by Mion's deft keyboard work, backed by tight rhythmic grooves, rich horn sections, and resonant vocal harmonies that reflect a hybrid of jazz fusion and funk sensibilities, a sound encapsulated in their notable album "Troupeau Bleu" released in 1975. This record, in particular, is celebrated for its track "Huit Octobre 1971," which has been widely sampled by hip-hop artists over the years.

Despite not gaining widespread commercial success during their initial active years, Cortex has amassed a dedicated following, and their work has been extensively sampled and revered by a new generation of musicians and producers. Their more recent releases, such as "Californie" and "Pourquoi," along with concert recordings like "Inedit 79," demonstrate the band's enduring legacy and continued exploration in jazz. The uninterrupted interest in the band has also led to the reissuing of their classic albums, allowing old fans and new listeners alike to experience the distinctive and infectious grooves of Cortex's timeless music.
