The Edsels

The Edsels were an American doo-wop group active during the late 1950s and early 1960s, most famous for their hit song "Rama Lama Ding Dong," which was originally released in 1958. The group was formed in Campbell, Ohio, and originally consisted of lead singer George "Wydell" Jones Jr., James Reynolds, Harry Green, Marshall Sewell, and Larry Greene. The Edsels achieved moderate success during their original run, but "Rama Lama Ding Dong," initially a regional hit, surged in popularity after being re-released in 1961, reaching number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Despite their defining hit, The Edsels struggled to find sustaining success in the competitive music industry of their time. Following the release of several more singles and the departure of George Jones Jr. for a solo career, the group eventually disbanded in the mid-1960s. However, their music continued to resonate with doo-wop enthusiasts and found new life in various golden oldies compilations. Many of their original recordings, like "Rama Lama Ding Dong," endured as quintessential examples of the doo-wop genre and have been digitally re-released, ensuring that The Edsels' melodic contributions continue to enchant old fans and reach new listeners. With the group's recently released digital singles and EPs, The Edsels' music remains an integral part of the tapestry that is classic American rock and roll.
