Joan Sebastian

Joan Sebastian, born José Manuel Figueroa Sr., was a cherished Mexican singer-songwriter who became a symbol of Latin music's regional Mexican genre. Born on April 8, 1951, in Juliantla, Guerrero, Mexico, he was known as "El Rey del Jaripeo" because of his love for rodeo performances and "El Poeta del Pueblo" (The People's Poet) for his evocative lyrics. Sebastian's career spanned more than four decades, during which he composed hundreds of songs and released more than thirty albums, touching the hearts of millions with his romantic ballads and heartfelt norteñas.

Sebastian's artistry was marked by his distinctive voice and his ability to blend traditional Mexican music with contemporary sounds. Despite facing challenges, including a battle with bone cancer, he continued to perform and produce music, leaving behind a legacy that resonates across Latin America and among Spanish-speaking populations. Some of his most memorable releases in recent years include "Mi Esencia," "Mis Nuevas Baladas," and "Pegadito Al Corazón." The live album "El Último Jaripeo (En Vivo)" captured the essence of his dynamic performances. Sadly, Joan Sebastian passed away on July 13, 2015, but his music and the richness of his contributions to Mexican culture continue to be celebrated and cherished through collections like the "Antología: El Poeta Del Pueblo" series, which encapsulates the enduring impact of his pioneering work.
